HAMILTON ROTARY MINUTES  for August 27, 2009
President Cynthia opened the meeting .  Rev John Lewis led the prayer and pledge.
There were no Guest Rotarians but we were introduced to the following guests:
Teresa Stapleton, guest of Ben Kincer, Paula Bethart, guest of Rick Bethart, and Christine Matacic, guest of Nancy Nix. (We were informed that Christine Matacic will be applying to be a Rotarian!)
Getting to Know You Victim ( I meant Speaker) was Rick Jones.  Rick is originally from Dayton, Ohio.  He is a Wright State U grad (and as he says, therefore not smug or preppie like OSU and MU grads!)  He has been married to Chris for 38 years, 26 of which were happy-(I’m sure he was only kidding about that.)  He has a BFA and MFA in Painting. He works at the Fitton Center and rescues animals on the side!   Thanks, Rick!
Next person to get to know will be Anne Flaig-Fiehrer.
Announcements:
1.     According to Pat Edwards, Past District Governor, our district was tops in Ohio for contributions to eradicate polio.  Our district gave $82,900+.   This year our club’s goal is $6,000.
2.     FYI- Sonja Kranbuhl has resigned from Rotary Board and from Rotary due to personal reasons.  We are looking someone who is interested in serving on the Board.
3.     Next Board meeting is September 1, noon, at the Coach House.
4.     Bob Sirk had open heart surgery and is recovering at home.
5.     The Oxford Club has invited us to tour the new Farmer Building, Wednesday , Sept. 2 at 7 pm.
6.     There is a Steak Fry event on Sept. 10 put on by the Middletown, Trenton and Hamilton Chambers.  Call 844-1500 for more information

Program: the Speaker was Denise Quinn, VP of the MillerCoors plant in Trenton
I’ll sum it up this way, what are10 things you should know about the MillerCoors Plant in Trenton?
1.     Their motto could be: As Ben Franklin put it “ Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy”
2.     The Trenton plant began producing in 1991.
3.     It is forecasted that the plant will brew 9.6 million barrels in 09.  That is 297,600,000 gallons of beer!!!!
4.     It employees 568 employees
5.     Ohio is the 4th largest brewing state in the country
6.     The Plant is working towards zero waste—they Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (not the beer, silly, the other stuff!)
7.     They employ 25-30 certified tasters so that they can check the beer during all shifts
8.     Each beer has different case profiles, so it is not just the same beer with different labels!
9.     The plant brews 41 beers under contract plus 22 of their own.
10.  The plant sits on a natural aquifer.

Happy Bucks- the Happiness scale was 0 today—no happy bucks!   I think it was because everyone was filling out an application to be a certified beer taster. (Thanks, Jeff for asking about those apps!)
Split the Pot-we have $114 in the pot—no winner today.
Sarge at Arms- He was on a roll today because he has not had a chance to speak lately (give him and inch and he takes a mile!!  Should make up for the 0 happy bucks)
Next Week our meal will be 2 soups and a salad.
Next Week’s program will be:  Doug Frank to talk about Polio Eradication plus we will be inducting a new member.

Have a Great Week!
Respectfully Submitted, Chris Hurr

Hamilton Rotary Minutes for August 13, 2009

President Cynthia called the meeting to order at 1210. Marcia Koenig led the prayer and pledge. The prayer and a moment of silence were in memory of Donna Carruthers and in support of Pat and Sara.

Visiting Rotarian: Fred Browen from Oxford

Guests: Rick Bethart’s guest was his lovely wife Paula
Bob Hancock’s guests were his wife Beth and daughter Stephanie. Stephanie was also our program.

Announcements:
Lisa Warren is back and she’s looking great!
The District Trilogy is Wednesday, August 19th at the Wilks Conference Center at Miami of Hamilton.
Don’t forget Polio Night at the Reds. Our District Governor desires at least $525.00 from our club for Polio Plus. Pres. Cynthia strong armed those present for a buck apiece.
Family Day at the Farm, (no not the bar on SR 27), with the Rotary Olympics will be September 27th.
George Jonson informed everyone of the upcoming Community Character Forum on Tuesday, August 25th 7pm at Parrish Auditorium. Dr. Hal Urban will be discussing what he calls “old-fashioned goodness”.
George also invited us to the “Open Houses” for our new 4 elementary schools which will be opening this year.

Program:
Bob Hancock introduced his daughter Stephanie. Stephanie has been in Thailand for the past 11 months. She presented a slide show showing her host families, the country, many temples and the activities she did. She hates spicy foods. She also stated there is nothing enjoyable about a 26-hour flight.

Highlights:
You can go to temple any day of the week you want.
School requires uniforms and the teacher is in absolute control.
Lots of rock climbing.
Families are very close. Both in relationship and distant. Usually within 3 blocks.
Very respectful culture. Senior citizens are shown great respect.
I kind of like Thailand.

School Board Member George Jonson presented Stephanie with her diploma from Hamilton High School. Not bad, skip school for 11 months and still graduate!

Stephanie will be entering Miami of Hamilton for one year and then will be going to The Ohio State University. Good luck Stephanie!

Sergeant at Arms:
                Pres. Cynthia shunned Joe.

Happy Bucks:
Bill Hartford: 5-bucks for Stephanie representing our club in Thailand.
Jim Fitton: 5-bucks for his daughter Emily and her acceptance to Miami University.
Maureen Noe: 5-bucks for the upcoming United Way regional merger meeting.
George Jonson: 5-bucks for his grandson’s 11-year old West Side Little League team that won the State and for the West Side Little League team that is currently playing in the LL Regional play in Indianapolis.

                Split the Pot:
Bill Hartford won but he did not get the big bucks.

The next “Getting to Know You” will be Rick Jones.

Meeting adjourned at 1242

Respectfully submitted,
Steve Timmer for Chris Hurr

HAMILTON ROTARY MINUTES  for August 6, 2009
President  Cynthia  opened the meeting and Frank Margello led the prayer and pledge.
There were no guests but Hans and Ute Papke were Rotarians visiting from the Cincinnati Club.  Mae Berkel came with Hans and is from the Centerville Club.
There was no “Getting to know you” speaker this week.  I guess we needed a break from the wild tales and personal details of Rotarians’ “real” lives!
Announcements:
There is still time to sign up for the District Trilogy, scheduled for 8/19 at Wilkes, MU.
Help out Polio Plus and buy tickets for the Red’s game 8/28.  $30 per ticket.  Contact Hans Berkel, 1778 West Rahn Road, Dayton, Ohio 45459 for tickets.  Invite friends, neighbors, etc.
New Member Orientation will be held next week at 11:00 on Thursday before Rotary, down the hall from where we meet.  Good opportunity for those needing credit for their blue badge, as well as new members.
Speaking of Blue Badges, Congrats goes to Father Tim who received his blue badge this week!  (We think he must have had Divine help since he got it so quickly!)
Last week we talked about Rotary Facebook and Twitter.  Here are the sites:
Facebook:  http://www.facebook.com/pages/Rotary-Club-of-Hamilton/9087764793
Twitter:   http://twitter.com/hamiltonrotary
Program:
We were privileged to have the District Governor, Hans Berkel speak to us today.  His mantra is “Be a Rotarian, not just a member of Rotary”!  The Rotary theme this year is “The Future of Rotary is in your Hands”.  His talk included his version of the “bucket list”.  The top 4 things he’d like us to accomplish are:
1.      Finish the job of eradicating polio
2.     Increase membership and support the international foundation. He challenged us to each contribute $50 to that foundation this year.
3.     Spread the word about Rotary
4.     Re-“invent” our involvement in Rotary

He distributed gifts which included special pins.  He expects a $10 fine for those not wearing their pins next week.
Speaking of fines, our Sarge at Arms is in Hilton Head, so someone will have to tell him about the fines…he’ll have to pay as well!  (of course, we can add to that and tell him that anyone with a new tan and sand in their shoes must pay extra!)
Happy Bucks-  By the number of happy bucks, I’d say we are a “one” on the happiness scale this week.  Maybe next week will be better.
Split the Pot- Jeff Diver picked a losing card. (No, I did not call Jeff a “loser”!  He’s a nicer guy than that!)
Next Week’s Program: Speaker will be Stephanie Hancock, our Rotary Exchange Student.  She will be talking about her stay in Thailand.
Menu next week: soup and salad bar (2 soups and salad with assorted toppings, bread and a dessert of the Chef’s choice.
Special note:
The following individual has been proposed to the Board of Directors for membership to our club:
Marc Bellisario
CEO, Butler County Community Health Consortium
Classification:  Community Health
Proposers:  Jeff Diver

Any objections to membership should be presented to the Board in writing within 10 days.

Respectfully submitted, Chris Hurr
Have a great week!

HAMILTON ROTARY CLUB BULLETIN JULY 30, 2009

THE WEEK THAT WAS...

As mentioned in last week’s publication, New Prez #4 Stever welcomed all to the Hamilton Rotary Club Assembly.  As the boo’s were dying down, she asked Fr. Tim Bunch to do the prayer and pledge (with a professional, what can go wrong?).
Ann Antenen came to the podium to announce that we had no guests or VR’s and quite a few members were absent as well.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU...
Denny G Walsh took his turn in the barrel and explained that his middle name was George.  It seems that his great grandmother (or someone) had a crush on George Custer (“of last stand fame”) and named all succeeding off springs “George” (the loser).  He has been employed in the trust dept. at First for 39 years (and the assets are still about the same) and had Mary E.S. Dadosky as a teacher.  What a marvelous guy!

ANNOUNCEMENTS...
To give everyone ample notice, New Prez #4 made us aware that Dist. Gov. Hans Berkel MD would be the program next week and we will have lasagna in his honor (funny, he doesn’t sound very Italian).
Once again, the new one reminded us of the Trilogy on Aug.19 and now has 4 people attending.  She sweetened the pot by saying the club would pay for your meal (next week she may even offer wine).
Ron Smith, the new member orientation guy, resplendent in a new suit, reminded one and all of the orientation on Aug 13th at 11:00 at the hotel (this is a must for folks trying to move from a red badge to blue).

THE PROGRAM, OR NOT...
Actually, not so much a program but the “Club Assembly,” where the New Prez promises things like better attendance, lower dues, better food and dozens of new “quality” members and the possibility of dancing girls upon occasion (same old, same old...).
Mike Kihm, the new Anneliese, admonished that everyone should sign in, cancel meals by noon on Mondays, and send the stubs when paying dues, etc.
Dave Loeffler, our bean counter, asked for budget request by Tuesday.  Yea, Dave, how about a raise for bulletin editors?
It went on...Nancy O’Neill is going after “quality” members.  Paul Thoms is spreading the Rotary word like an evangelist.  Jason Crank suggested payroll deductions instead of fundraisers and Terry Weekly says we need to sell more ads for Rotary Presents and Jim Fitton wants us to send more money to the R Foundation (become a Paul Harris Fellow, no money down and ten easy payments).   Steve Timmer made a pitch for more host families for the boatload of study exchange folks arriving in May.
I hope I got it all as I ran out of paper and had to finish up on some of the handouts.

COMMERCIAL...
Jim Fitton gave a heart-rending plug for the Hamilton Joes (it may be that he glad they didn’t laugh at his one bounce pitch last week).

Editor: Ken Snyder who thankfully turns over the quill, pencil, typewriter and keyboard to Chris Hurr.  Give’em Hell!
